You know I have three little beasties residing in my small home, but what you might not realize is we are a veritable zoo. Let's count the occupants of our small abode: The Big Daddy Love (self-named), Beasties 1 2 & 3, Mack the Monkey (little bro), Tilly the Cockatiel, Mohanna the Leopard Gecko, Chi-Chi the Dumbo Rat (yes, *sigh* I own a rat) and the newest member of the Applegate Zoo- Jethro the Catahoula Hound Dog. If you count the neighbor's cat I scare out of my yard, the 5 random squirrels skittering about, and the local lizards sunning themselves, I believe I can start charging admission. Who wouldn't want to pay to see Gunner scooping dog food into the water bowl to make "soup" or peer into a cage to see the shy *gulp* rat hiding in her shavings? Seriously, this has got to be the best zoo around!
I, as you might have noted, do not count myself among the zoo members...I am their zoo keeper- earning my living cleaning up after, entertaining and feeding the animal masses. In payment, I receive a lot of hugs, kisses, chirps and other sounds of approval.
We are actually really excited to have Jethro. He's a darling little dog and so much fun (and work) for all of us. Kit and I thought long and hard about getting a dog. We both loved our dogs growing up and think they are great for teaching kids about love, work and responsibility. However, you have to be ready to take full responsibility for the training and care of the animal. We brought home the little (barely 6 weeks) puppy to surprise the boys and they quickly fell in love. Josiah and Gavin understand it is their job to make sure he is played with daily and must be fed before they can get their breakfast. It is fun to see them act more maturely and ready to take care for another instead of being taken care of.
Welcome to the Zoo, Jethro!

This is where our eerie similarities end...we will NEVER have a dog! I never understand families with small kids that get puppies - so much work! The kids know that we're not getting an animal because this mommy does not clean up poop. I'm done changing diapers and I'm not about to pick up an animal's poop! They rely on the neighbor's dogs for their animal fix.
I am so jealous! I still remember your gorgeous Springer Spaniel growing up! The puppy is so cute! What lucky boys you have for letting them have all those gross pets boys always want. But a rat, seriously Liberty you need to have a girl!
I seriously wish we could visit. I know Carson would just LOVE to see the animals. (even now Carson just pointed to your puppy and said "ooh!"
(We had rats when I was young...yes plural...we bought two(supposedly both males)...so they wouldn't be lonely...hmmm
a bazillion babies later...
IF we ever buy a rat...that's it...only one!
What a cute puppy to add to your family zoo! Cute post :)
Oh, he is so cute!! I wish I could have been there when your boys saw him, I know they were so excited. Little boys and their puppies...imagine the trouble they can get into!! ;)
LOVE your dog! He's so cute! I think it's one of the best purchases we've ever made...you can't have a family full of boys and NOT have an animal of some sort. The effect could be disastrous...
My little brother bought and hid an albino rat in his room for over a month before my parents found out about it...it wasn't in a cage...that's how BAD he wanted a pet. Better to know about what it is you are cleaning up after is all I have to say!
lol.
Ohmyheck!! What a fabulously cute puppy! I love him and I'm hundreds of miles away! I can only imagine how much fun and love your boys have spoiled him with. I love, love, love it. Thank you for the the post and especially the pics.
I love how you explained your family zoo...and I can attest, you are the loving family zookeeper. ;) p.s. I would pay admission anyday to come visit. :)
So cute. Have fun with your new addition! :)
yay! yay! yay! I bet your boys are just so darn excited. Gavie, especially, wanted one so bad when he was hear. You're just the nicest mom ever. See, why do my kids need a pet, they have mom's, steph's, and yours to visit.
ps-when did you get the rat? (love the name, by the way)
