Splurges

I was pondering splurges today. You know, adding up the little things I do for myself. I don't view myself as selfish really (but then, do you know a selfish person who does?-so, I'm hoping I'm not just deluding myself), but I have a few luxuries I allow myself. To start, I adore paper plates. I know, I know...I'm killing the world single-handedly with my splurge, but I don't have a dishwasher. Not an excuse, but I ABHOR dishes. Truly, it is my most hated chore and I would rather mop floors, do laundry and clean toilets than wash as many dishes as we produce by hand 3 times a day. Which brings me to my next splurge-bleach tablets for the toilets. Fabulous! I love the smell of bleach every time the toilet is flushed AND how easy the toilet is to clean. I also love color catchers for the laundry. They are my peace of mind in case of color mishaps. Love 'em!

I splurge on my appearance, too. I love the look of my nails being done, but cannot afford the upkeep. To keep my man-hands from looking so manly, I splurge and buy fake nails and apply them myself once a week or so. Ahhh, well manicured hands for a fraction of the cost. I'm going gray(blehhh!!!) and I am so not okay with it! So, to combat the old-tired mommy creeping in, I dye. I {{heart}} those little boxes. Phew, keep that gray away!

I also keep easy foods on hand for my beasties' lunches. Ramen and chicken nuggets have a continual place here in my home. I love the convenience of the quick fix for their hunger. Saves time; makes me smile!

Are you as selfish as I am? Or, am I telling you all my deep, dark secrets? I love hearing about other people's favorites and can't-do-withouts.

I thought some of your splurges were part of necessary living;) I don't know if cleaning products count as a personal luxury although you probably benefit from them the most. I loved all the little secrets.

Ahhh, the paper plates. Reminds me of visit to good ol' Alabama :)

As for the rest of the splurges, you are one of the most unselfish, frugal girls I know, so I sincerely doubt your splurging is all that over-the-top. Don't worry, we all love our little luxuries. I'm a color-catcher fan too and I (shhh!) kill the environment w/my aerosol hairspray. Horrid, I know!

Let's get one thing straight: You are not selfish! Splurges are well-deserved rewards for hard work...or at least that is how I justify them. They need no explanation since they are unique to the individual. Keep using your paper plates. I won't judge you!

I love a good massage and expensive shampoo/conditioner.
Gym time is my daily, "this-takes-priority-over-other-stuff" splurge. It energizes my body and clears my mind.

Oh Lib, you make me laugh at what you consider splurges! I agree with everyone's comments, you are not selfish! I watch you and others around me that are cost conscience and know that I need to do better. I guess one of my splurges is I shop for convience not a deal. I will buy diapers at Walgreens if it is on my way home rather than driving the opposite way to Walmart. Stupid I know, becuase Walgreens only carries the small packages of them and cost way more than Walmart (or even better Sams Club), but who whats to drive all that way?!?!

I spend too much money on make up, hair products, clothes, etc. One thing I don't do that you do is paper plates. I am not against them, it is just that they create another chore that I hate even more than you hate doing the dishes! Taking out the trash! I would rather load the dishwasher (that is the difference, I have a dishwasher) than take out the blasted trash! Silly I know, but I hate it!

I ahve to echo what everyone else has said...you are sooo not selfish!! I'd have to agree those things are your sanity and you deserve sanity!!
Hmmm, I do the color catchers and the other day I wanted to splurge and try those little gel thingies you pop onto the inside of your toilet to keep them clean. Mmm, love them so far. Grey actually yelled at me from the potty why the potty smelled so good. Nice. Let's see, what else. I do the nail thing to, as you well know. And, I have to have my full repatiore of hair and makeup essentials. I would love to splurge and go with Este Lauder and such...but that'll have to wait for another day. I love my house smelling good, and I do love to splurge and get some good 'ol Bath and Body Works for the sir fresheners, but a transmition comes first this month. Oh well.
I sure love you!! Thanks for you post!!

As I scratch me white haired head, I guess I have a couple of questions. What's wrong with white hair, but I get it. It was weird being 20-something and people thinking your son was your grandson.
Next, since when did basic necessities, become luxuries? Other than the stick-on nails (what a dollar per 20 pack or something…!), you toe a very tight line my dear. Most folks do not realize the sacrifices made by the families of our service men and women, just to keep land, air and coasts safe.
I love you very much!

Oh love, you make me look bad!:) Everybody probably thinks I'm an oppressive husband. Personally i feel you need to spend more on your self, and not feel guilty about it. I agree with Anna, they are well deserved for how wonderful of a Mother, Wife, and Best friend you are. Thanks for everything you do for me and the boys. Go buy your self something special...maybe from dollar tree:) just kidding, Love you.

You are funny Lib! I was thinking geez if those are splurges I've got some rethinking to do. I love that you use your own stick on nails! And the lunch thing...Pearl would be happy at your house but I'd add some eggos to your splurges for those quick breakfasts on the go for the little ones.

Liberty, you are DEFINITELY not selfish. I think the proof is in your words. First, as mentioned some of your luxury items are things that help keep your home clean, and the paper plates allow for you to have time to do more important things like be with your kiddos instead of standing at a sink doing dishes. The other luxuries like your nails, and hair color--you are being frugal, doing them yourself instead of going to a salon every few weeks. Nope not selfish in my book.
And, as for Kit's remarks...VERY sweet that you know what priceless treasure you have in Liberty!

I guess my selfish treasure is that I beg Mike to help me with the dishes every night (after he has worked all day) and I have a dishwasher. Actually, I would not mind doing them, but I hate doing them alone. Also, I do love to go to the thrift store, but I have to admit, I have not been there to buy stuff for me in a while. Also, I'm selfish, in that at Christmas time when I'm buying presents for others, I wish that I were buying them for myself b/c I know I don't have the money to buy them for me, so probably will never get them. Yikes, I feel bad for even typing that so others can read it, but it's true. Now that's selfish!

BTW, what are color catchers and where do you buy them. I feel dumb for asking something I should probably know. :)

Lib, You are so right on for most busy moms and the way the economy is going now who can afford everything!! I too feel quite guilty on splurging on anything that isn't a neccesity in our home and especially me but like you when I do I LOVE THEM!!! I think that makes us appreciative of the small stuff that shelfish people wouldn't even think about in the first place they don't think about others or have a concience ya know! So this post alone bumps ya out of the selfish category. But as for our family our splurges would definitely be febreeze noticables and air fresheners, color catchers=is im guessing andrea what i do catching dye or color on sale or for a better buy, estee lauder make up always during free gift time of course, blog/facebook time, and going for walks with the kiddos is definitely a new one. As far as quick foods for me and the kiddos are hands down in love with pop tarts, lucky charms, & captn crunch YUMMY every so often dewayne loves to suprise
the boys with lil ceasears pizza. Dewayne would have to be my biggest splurg and this is worse than any confession of Andrea's Dewayne loves to cook and he doesnt mind loading the dish washer or loading and unloading the clothes so what does that leave for me HMM eating his yummy food, unloading the dryer and dishwasher!!! yeah I am really telling all!! But I like to be really involved in the boys parker learning preschool stuff and dylan and his 2nd grade homework WOW! So that leaves poor dewayne AFTER work all day to come home to a full time job at home! We are blessed and definitely all contribute in our own ways its just really far from the conventional way!! LOVES & MISS ya LIB!!
