Bye-Bye Binkie!

Today the Binkies broke. Yes, ALL of them. Josiah and Gavin both couldn't understand how they could just break, but I told them when you get big enough, the binkies break and you're now a Big Boy. It broke Gav's heart. He sobbed, asked me to hold him, then cheered slightly when he told me we could go to the store to buy more. I told him again he was now a big boy and could pick a new big-boy cup out at Wal-mart, but no more binkies. He kept asking "How?" and "Why did the binkies break?" He even asked me to get him a screwdriver and a hammer so he could fix them. The 3 binkie stubs have been his constant companions today. Needless to say, it has been a long and rather emotional day. His cousin Ezra gave up the binkie last month, so Gavin wanted to call and have someone to commiserate with him. Ezra told him "I'm sorry. It's okay." Comforting words from someone who has shared the pain. If the abrupt demise of the binkies seems harsh to you, know it is hard on me, too. I don't want to take his comfort away, but within the last month, he has gotten way too attached. He has gone from a nap/night binkier to an all-day binkier. It had to go!-but not without some tears from Gavin (and me).

Oh Lib, I know the feeling...it's heart-breaking. Enough to make you wonder if you're doing the right thing; but you are, and you are saving him a world of independance trouble in future. Hold tight, it's so hard to feel like you are forcing them to grow up though huh? from one mom to another "hang tuff" :)

This too shall pass...poor little boy, it about broke my heart when ya'll called me this morning w/him crying. He's becoming such a big guy, though. Next week we'll be out there to help you and we can all tell him what a big boy he's become! I guess it had to happen eventually-odd how binkies always seem to mysteriously break en masse, huh.

Hi Liberty! How are you doing? You have 3 kids now? Oh my goodness! So where are you, still in the navy? We're stationed in Dayton, OH. I'd love to catch up! Love, ~Jill~

Everyone- Thanks for the pep-talks...I needed them, especially after bed-time tonight. Gav cried like his heart was breaking for 45 minutes. After throwing his broken binkies, clutching 3 stuffed animals and balacing a now-retrieved broken binkie on his mouth, he's settled down for the night. I hope this passes quickly.

Jill- How are you all doing? Kit is stationed at the Coast Guard base down here in Mobile. We LOVE it. Are you enjoying military life? How's it treating you? I'd love to stay in touch!

Oh Lib, I am so sorry. And to think that you did that while Kit is gone, so brave! I had to shed a tear or two over the thought of the broken binkies. I remember so clearly Cooper's reaction to the binkies and it still can make me tear up. I love you, hang in there. It'll be okay and Gav won't be scarred forever, I promise.
